Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It is also an alternative form of healing known as energy work. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen life force, Chi, flows through us. Reiki works with the human energy field. The body’s energy system, known as chakras, acts as regulators and allows energy to flow freely through our spiritual, emotional and physical being. When we have disease, illness or stress our chakras become out of balance. Reiki puts these chakras back into balance, thus allowing the body to heal itself. Stress is one of the main causes of energy to be blocked causing all sorts of problems from low back pain to headaches. The use of Reiki can greatly increase the body’s ability to deal the stress, helping to prevent and alleviate disease. What is a session like? A Reiki Massage combines Reiki energy work (see write up on Reiki energy) with a true swedish massage. The session begins with Reiki being performed followed by the massage. The Swedish massage is not one of deep pressure since the session begins as energy work to allow the body to relax and “de-stress.” During the Reiki treatment the client may feel a lot of comforting heat or a gentle vibration. It is not uncommon for a person to drift into a meditative state or even to drift off to “sleep”, waking refreshed and usually pain free. Emotional release may also happen, which is a normal process. During the massage the therapist does not provide deep, targeted pressure on specific areas but will instead focus on providing more relaxation for the client. How long is a session? This session lasts approximately 90 minutes.
Aromatherapy massage uses one or more scented plant oils called essential oils to address specific needs. Your therapist can select oils that are relaxing, energizing, stress-reducing, balancing, etc. Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to relieve stress and emotional strain.
Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Your therapist uses slower strokes or friction techniques across the grain of the muscle. Used for chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems, or recovery from injury. You may feel sore for one to two days after deep tissue massage.
Promote circulation and a sense of relaxation and well-being with this massage. Bamboo of varying lengths and diameters are used with deep tissue techniques.
Heated, smooth stones are placed on certain points on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy centers in the body. Your therapist may also hold stones and apply gentle pressure with them. The warmth is comforting. Hot stone massage is good for people who have muscle tension but prefer lighter massage.
Prenatal massage shares many of the goals of regular massage, to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility, and just make you feel good. But it’s also tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies, our therapists, who are trained in prenatal massage, will adjust their techniques accordingly. We use pillows for this service.
